1. Write your address in the
top right-hand corner, but do not write your name above the address: your name
comes at the end of the letter.
2. Write the date under your
address. There are several correct ways for writing the date; for example,
18.4.2000, or 18/4/2000, or 18 April 2000, but the best is if you write the name
of the month (April), not the number only (4).
3. Begin your letter with
"Dear Sir(s)" or "Dear Sir or Madam" if you don't know the
name of the person you are writing to.
4. You can put a comma (,)
after "Dear ...", or write nothing. In American English, some people
put a colon (:) here.
5. If you're writing to a
woman, and you don't know if she is married or not, write "Ms": Dear
Ms. Brown
6. At the end of the letter,
write "Yours faithfully" if you wrote "Dear Sir" at the
beginning; write "Yours" or "Yours sincerely" if you used
the person's name
("Dear Mr. Brown").
7. If you're writing to a
close friend or relative, you can use these expressions at the end: "Best
wishes", "Love", "Best regards", "All the best"
or "See you soon"
How
to write a "thank you" letter. It is the kind of letter that you write
when you received something (for example, for your birthday), or when you want
to thank somebody for something they did for you (for example, they invited you
to a party or helped you).
A) The first paragraph
If it is a formal letter, you
can begin like this:
I am writing to thank you for
...
I would like to thank you for
...
If it is a letter to a friend
or a close relative, you can write:
Thanks a lot for ...
Thank you very much for ...
In each case, after
"for" you can use a noun phrase or a verb in its "-ing" form:
Thanks a lot for your kind
help. or
Thanks a lot for helping me.
Always write one more
sentence in the first paragraph. It can be about the present that you got:
It's just what I need!
It's simply beautiful - I
love it!
It's my favourite colour! (American
English spelling: favorite color)
Or if it was a
party, you can
say how much you enjoyed yourself:
I had a wonderful time!
It was really great!
I enjoyed myself enormously!
Of course, you can write more
here, not only these two sentences.
B) The second paragraph
In the next part of the
letter, ask about the health of the person you are writing to, and also about
their family.
I hope you are well. (OK,
this is not really a question, but it's polite to write this.)
How is your family?
I hope your father is better
now.
C) The last paragraph
You can use these phrases:
I look forward to seeing you
again. (this is a bit formal) I'm looking forward to seeing you. (more informal)
I hope you can come and visit
me soon.
It is also polite to say
thank you once again:
Thanks again,
Thank you very much for
everything once again,
Now
do the exercise below.
